Nollywood: W3

Pretty much, Nollywood is just like Hollywood or Bollywood, it was created around the 1990’s and was created in Africa, more specifically in Nigeria. But something i bet you didn’t know is that it is the 2nd largest movie industry in the world, which is pretty weird to think about considering I for one have never even heard of Nollywood. Like I mean, we all know Hollywood and Bollywood, but why is it that no one has heard of Nollywood??

I guess it comes back to what i mentioned in my other blogposts about globalisation and the spread of it. While globalisation seems to be the western world showing the rest of the world how its done, Africa is still a developing nation and hasn’t quite become fully globalised yet, in my opinion, this is why not many people have heard of Nollywood.

Another factor of this however is that Nollywood films are shown in theatres they are sold locally, usually set up at a corner store in Africa and sold (a few tens of thousands of copies). The Nigerian movie industry is rapidly growing and last year alone made 3.3 billion $$ thats crazy right?

The movies that this idea revolves around all display and highlight important things to Africans, it displays their culture, religion, nature and general ways of life, they are an expression – rather than a fantasy.
